Why Your Accountant is Asking More Questions Than Ever

"Didn't I give you this information last year?"
"Shouldn't you already know this?"
"Why do you need to ask me all of these questions again?"
As we begin another financial year and information starts flowing in for 2026 tax returns and financial statements, we know that some of our requests can feel repetitive — or even a little intrusive.
The truth is, we don't ask questions because we enjoy creating more work for you.
We ask them because our profession, the legislation that governs it, and the expectations placed upon accountants have changed significantly over recent years.
Every Year Is Different
Even if your circumstances feel exactly the same, we can't assume they are.
Did you start or stop working from home?
Purchase or sell an investment?
Receive Centrelink benefits?
Refinance a loan?
Change employers?
Buy tools, equipment or work-related assets?
Receive income from a new source?
Have changes to your family situation?
Change your address, contact details or bank account information?
Small changes can have surprisingly large tax implications, and it's our responsibility to ask rather than assume.
What was correct last year isn't automatically correct this year.
We Have Professional Responsibilities
As registered tax professionals, we're required to ensure the information we use is accurate, complete and supported.
Our role isn't simply to prepare tax returns — it's to exercise professional judgement and ensure the work we lodge meets the standards expected by the Australian Taxation Office and our professional bodies.
That means asking questions. Sometimes lots of them.
While they may feel repetitive, they're designed to protect both you and us should your affairs ever be reviewed.
The ATO Is Receiving More Information Than Ever Before
Many clients are surprised by just how much information the ATO already receives.
Banks, employers, government agencies, investment platforms, health funds, share registries, cryptocurrency exchanges and many other organisations now provide information directly to the ATO.
This means the ATO's data matching capabilities continue to expand each year.
Our job is to ensure the information we prepare aligns with the available evidence and to identify anything that may require clarification before your return is lodged.
Anti-Money Laundering Is Changing The Landscape
Australia is also strengthening its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) framework.
These reforms place greater emphasis on verifying identities, understanding business structures and ensuring we know who we're acting for and why.
While many of these requirements happen quietly in the background, they may occasionally mean we need to request additional information or documentation that we haven't previously asked for.
These requests aren't about mistrust — they're about meeting our legal and professional obligations.
Why We Love Checklists
You may have noticed we're increasingly using secure digital checklists and information requests. ContentSnare is the main online system we are now using for online requests, tax submission, tax queries and other updates.
There's a good reason for that.
Rather than dozens of emails going back and forth, these systems help us:
Make sure nothing is overlooked.
Collect information in one secure location.
Reduce delays caused by missing documents.
Improve communication throughout your job.
Deliver your work more efficiently.
The more complete your information is when it reaches us, the faster we can complete your work.
We're Looking For Opportunities Too
Not every question is about compliance.
Sometimes a single answer alerts us to something that could save you tax, improve your record keeping, or identify planning opportunities for the future.
Questions help us provide sound tax advice — not just prepare paperwork.
Thank You For Working With Us
We appreciate that gathering information takes time. We know it can sometimes feel repetitive.
But every question has a purpose.
Our goal is to ensure your work is accurate, compliant, complete and gives you confidence that it's been done properly.
Thank you for trusting us with something so important.
